John P. Batson, MD, FACSM
Background. Dr. Batson is a Hilton Head Island native and graduate of Hilton Head High School. He graduated Cum Laude with a BS in Biology from the College of Charleston and completed medical school at USC School of Medicine in Columbia, SC. He completed internship and residency with Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville, SC. He then went on to complete a primary care sports medicine fellowship with USC School of Medicine during which he served as a team physician with the USC Gamecocks and the SC State Bulldogs. Subsequent to this he completed a 12 month interventional spine fellowship associated with Mount Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Batson is the only physician in South Carolina board certified in Sports Medicine and Pain Medicine. Dr. Batson was in private practice in Columbia for four years before relocating to the Lowcountry. He specializes in interventional spine care, adult and pediatric sports medicine and pain medicine.
Professional Involvement. During his residency he was a grant recipient for the planning of a program for overweight youth which was subsequently recognized nationally by the American Academy of Pediatrics. While in Columbia, Dr. Batson served as a Clinical Associate Professor with USC School of Medicine teaching to residents and medical students. He has co-authored five sports medicine book chapters and presented over 50 medical lectures at both state wide and national meetings. In 2005, he was the recipient of the USC School of Medicine Distinguished Young Physician Alumni Award. He is the only physician in the Lowcountry to hold the distinction of fellow member of the American College of Sports Medcine, the largest and most respected sports medicine organization in the world. He is a member of the International Spine Interventional Society and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. Locally he volunteers his time as a sideline physician for local high school sports.
Personal. Dr. Batson is married to Alice and has a 13 year old step daughter Jordan. He literally “grew up” on the water racing windsurfers throughout high school and working for Outside Hilton Head as a windsurfing instructor and kayak tour guide. He remains an avid water sports enthusiast and interests include windsurfing, kiteboarding, kayaking and waterskiing.
